How to Fix Ethernet Connected but No Internet Issue

How to Fix Ethernet Connected but No Internet Issue

Even though the vast majority of people use cable internet services, many still use an ethernet connection. The Ethernet cables are needed while setting up a Wi-Fi connection for the first time. Ethernet cables have special ports on modems, laptops, and computers that are easily distinguishable.

People who prefer using an ethernet connection have a valid reason. It is their capacity to deliver a decent speed. Unlike other older communication protocols such as DSL, the ethernet connection is quite easy to use. A well set up ethernet connection can be used with a simple plugin of a cord. However, every once in a while, you may run into connectivity issues that may result in packet loss or other ethernet connectivity errors.

If you have already plugged in the ethernet cable and it appears connected, but you can’t seem to get internet access on your computer or laptop, here is how you can fix this issue.

1. Try reconnecting the Ethernet Cable

This may seem too simple. However, sometimes the problem can occur just because the Ethernet cable is unable to form a connection between the modem and the device. This renders the computer or the laptop incapacitated, and you see the ‘no internet access’ error.

In such cases, the first thing you can do is unplug the Ethernet cable. Then, wait for at least a few moments before re-plugging it in the computer or laptop. This solves the problem most of the time. If you continue to experience the same issue, try the following method to fix ethernet error.

2. Reboot the Modem

If the issue is not with the cable, it could be due to a problem with the modem. If a bug or error is causing glitches in the modem, you may experience a slow ethernet connection or, the modem may not connect to the internet at all.  You should simply reboot your modem without unplugging the ethernet cord from your device.

Plug out the modem and let all lights switch off. Then, wait for at least a couple of minutes before turning it back on. Once all lights are on, try connecting your ethernet cable again.

3. Inspect All Ports

If the issue persists, it is time to check whether all the cords are plugged in properly. As there are several ports on your modem’s back, they could have different functions as well. Some ports are dedicated to input and others for output. You should plug the main ethernet cable into one of these input ports. However, the ethernet cable that is used to connect a device (computer or laptop) to the internet must be plugged into the output port on the modem. If the cables aren’t plugged into the correct ports, you may face the ethernet connectivity issue.

4. Update the Driver of Your Network’s Card

Outdated network drives may also cause the Ethernet connectivity issue. Try updating them. If you don’t know how to manually update drivers, you can do so automatically by using various open-source solutions such as Driver Easy.

Use the Driver Easy Offline Scan feature if you are unable to connect to the internet because of outdated network driver problems. It will help you download and install the latest network driver seamlessly by automatically identifying your system and downloading the corresponding drivers.

Once you update all network drivers, try connecting the ethernet cable again.

5. Turn off any Antivirus or Firewall temporarily

If you are experiencing latency issues and want to fix slow upload speeds, try disabling the antivirus or firewall of your system for some time. The disruption from antivirus software may also cause Ethernet connectivity problems. To find out if your antivirus is causing this issue, disable it temporarily.

While you have disabled the antivirus, be vigilant about the websites you browse, the files you download, and the emails you open. To keep your system safe, find an alternate antivirus. If you successfully fix your connectivity after disabling the software, contact the retailer of antivirus software and discuss your issue, or you may try using different antivirus software.

Last Resort…

In case you have tried all solutions and nothing has worked, it is time that you get in touch with your internet service provider. The Ethernet connectivity issue could have occurred due to an internet outage or some other error that cannot be fixed at your end. In this case, your ISP should be able to provide their assistance and sort out this issue.
