Oct. 03, 2019 – A good news for all the military members in the States! They can now avoid paying the cancellation fees when terminating their Internet or TV service. Previously, this rule applied to and was restricted to the mobile phone service only. The amendment to the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act in Public Law 115-407, the Veterans Benefits and Transition Act of 2018 brings relief!

This will now allow the military members to enjoy the same advantage if they end the TV and Internet services that they previously did for mobile phone service alone.

Under SCRA, military members could also get out of the car or apartment lease if they had permanent change of station (PCS) order. According to the rule, they should be deployed or relocated to a new location for at least 90 days. Also, their Internet provider or any other service provider in use should not be available in that location for them to terminate the existing service.

Before the amendment, the act only protected the military members against a penalty fee.

Moreover, that also protected them from being taken to the court when they broke the apartment or car lease.

The amended law was already there in some states. Under the new legislation, this rule now applies nationwide and is not restricted to a limited number of states. Hence, benefitting all military members in the country.

The amendment of the action took place in 2018 but it was not until Dec 31, 2018, that it became a law. The news came as a sigh of relief for the military members bound by the contracts by these telecom companies. The majority of these cable providers entered into a one to two years’ contract with them. Often the fees that individuals had to pay because of breaking the contract were not clearly stated. Hence, causing trouble for the military members who were constantly moving between states.

Now, the act protects the military members against any such contract or fees that could add up to hundreds of dollars.

Some telecom service providers have distributed cancellation fees over the number of months the service is used. These fees are also known as early termination fees. The nearer you are to completing your contract, the less you have to pay in case of early termination. Others just charge you a fixed cancellation fee that can range anywhere between $240 and $400.

However, military members do not need to worry about paying any extra or hidden fees now. The consumer protection for the military members against the mobile phone contracts. Now it also offers protection against TV and internet services.
